Artist Statement

This site is by no means “everything” but I do consider it to be a healthy, core sampling of my inquiry.

In “Main” I have posted what amounts to the focus of this site, all of it in rough chronological order from oldest to newest.

In “Tornadoes” I have posted imagery concerned with tornadoes per se, also in chronological order.

In “Figures” I have posted a smattering of figure imagery from studies to what could become experiments.

In “Critters” you will find an array of studies, most of them painted very quickly.

And in “Commissions” there are two labors of love and a family portrait that, while not what I usually do, were opportunities not to be missed…

Detail of “Bride on a Merry-go-Round 2” - 17 x 30 inches, oil on canvas, 2023.

I had another painting that had been going so poorly that I decided to jump ship and revisit this concept. In this case, I asked a friend to ride a local carousel while I took some video. She had on jeans and a t-shirt I think but maybe the right shoes kinda sorta. I then made something of a shadow puppet figure and posed her over other, drawn out reference. And the dress, veil, and any such fabric is all totally made up.

Very much a painting that sourced many different kinds of reference for what you see here.

Hanging at @arcadiagallery as part of “ American Games” through March 10th.

For this portion of the work I happened upon a ceramic carousel horse that was then set up under some shade outside. Changing the light around, painting from life, and painting from crude photography all went into this particular figure.

Hello! To anyone reading this, thank you for the comments and likes and everything else here but apologies too: I just want to say again (written somewhere below) that I am hardly ever on facebook as it has become such a minefield of moves - just the platform itself. As such, I set this page up to automatically post anything I put on instagram and the result was not seamless (go figure, right?!). But I did just go through and look for any questions and so forth - apologies again for the delays.

Speaking of instagram, it is much more user friendly if you've never tried it. You can hang back or participate as much as you want. And the screen does not look like a cockpit dashboard!
